The Devil's Brigade was formed in July 1942 under the official name of the 1st Special Service Force. This unique unit brought together American and Canadian soldiers and was specially trained to operate behind enemy lines. Many modern special units trace their origins back to this force. Due to their numerous night operations, where they blackened their faces for camouflage—probably for the first time—they earned the nickname "Black Devils" from the German Armed Forces, reflecting the great respect the enemy had for this relatively small unit.
The 1st SSF carried out many successful missions in Italy and France between 1943 and 1944, significantly influencing crucial wartime situations. An important piece of equipment for the Devil's Brigade was the specially designed V-42 combat knife, integral to their intensive close combat training. The handle, made of pressed leather discs, ends in a tapered striking piece. A thin leather padding under the slightly curved guard was intended to prevent injuries during thrusting. The coated blade, made of non-stainless 1095 carbon steel, is double-edged and features a grooved thumb ramp in the ricasso area. This legendary dagger still bears the emblem of the US Army Special Forces.
We offer this select collector's item with not only the classic, deep-fitting leather sheath but also a replica of the unit's textile insignia, the red spearhead. Additionally, it includes a reproduction of the original German-language sticker bearing the text "Das dicke Ende kommt noch!" ("The big end is yet to come!") alongside the 1st SSF insignia, which was used to demoralize the enemy by being stuck on walls, vehicles, doors, and more behind enemy lines. This ensemble is a valuable piece of military history worth collecting.
